NURSES BEGIN MOVING INTO NEW HOMES AT LACOR HOSPITAL

Thanks to the generosity of Social Promise donors, a major staff housing project at Lacor Hospital has reached an exciting milestone: the homes are complete, and nurses are beginning to move in.

The project was officially handed over from the Project Management Team to the Hospital Housing Committee, marking the completion of a multi-year effort to improve housing for Lacor's nursing staff. The new self-contained homes will accommodate 69 staff members and their families.

To understand why this project matters, it helps to understand a bit of Lacor's history.

For more than two decades, northern Uganda was affected by a brutal conflict involving the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA). During those years, Lacor Hospital continued providing care despite extraordinary challenges. To help keep nurses safe and ensure they could respond quickly to emergencies, staff housing was built on the hospital grounds.

The housing served an important purpose, but it was never intended to meet the needs of families decades later. Many nurses were still living in aging one-room apartments with shared cooking areas and shared latrines. As the buildings deteriorated, improving staff housing became a priority for hospital leadership.

The new homes reflect what Lacor's nurses need today. Each unit includes its own kitchen, bathroom, living space, electricity, and running water. The homes were designed with input from hospital staff and provide a level of privacy and functionality that was simply not possible in the older housing.

Lacor's leadership has long recognized that staff welfare is closely connected to the quality of care patients receive. Recruiting and retaining qualified nurses remains a challenge across many parts of Uganda, particularly in the north. By providing modern housing on the hospital campus, Lacor is making a long-term investment in the people who care for thousands of patients each year.

Today, nurses and their families are settling into their new homes, marking the completion of a project that has been years in the making. We are deeply grateful to every Social Promise donor who helped make it possible.
